GreenPlast 2025 is set to host the international conference “Shaping a Sustainable Future for Plastics”, organised in collaboration with AMI (Applied Market Information). The event is reaffirmed as a key reference point for issues related to sustainability and the environment within the plastics industry.
Among the highlights of the conference, on 29 May, Assorimap – the Italian National Association of Plastic Recyclers and Regenerators – will present the session “Mechanical Recycling of Plastics - 2024. Circularity in Markets”, focusing on the pivotal role of mechanical recycling in fostering the circularity and sustainability of plastics.
The future of mechanical recycling: data and perspectives
Assorimap’s session will begin with the presentation of the annual report on the production of post-consumer secondary raw materials, prepared by Plastic Consult. Paolo Arcelli, Director of Plastic Consult, will outline the updated 2024 data, highlighting how Europe’s mechanical recycling capacity has grown from 6 million tonnes in 2017 to 13.2 million tonnes in 2023. However, the recent energy crisis poses a significant challenge for the sector.
Despite these hurdles, the EU’s mandates on minimum recycled content in plastic products create new growth opportunities, encouraging the development of advanced technologies capable of producing recycled plastics of increasingly high quality. This progress extends the application of recycled plastics to more demanding sectors, such as food packaging.
A round table with a global perspective
The event will also feature a round table discussion on the circularity of recycled plastics markets, with contributions from leading experts, including Maria Cristina Poggesi (IPPR), Paolo Glerean (Recyclass), Stefano Chiaramondia (PlasticFinder), and others. The aim is to outline an integrated national and European vision of the challenges and opportunities in the recycling sector.
