Tonitto 1939, the Ligurian company specializing in ice creams and sorbets, has announced that it has reduced its plastic use by 50% over the past five years. The project involved all the company’s main product lines through an industrial transition process that progressively introduced FSC-certified paperboard packaging (Forest Stewardship Council). Wherever technically feasible and consistent with the product and market requirements, the company replaced plastic tubs with paper-based containers.
The path undertaken by Tonitto 1939 is part of a broader vision aimed at making the entire production chain increasingly sustainable, while maintaining a strong focus on innovation, quality and environmental impact reduction. The company is also evaluating a more structured technical assessment of the environmental benefits generated by its plastic reduction strategy, including in terms of CO₂ equivalent emissions.
Sustainability has become increasingly central not only for consumers, but for the entire FMCG supply chain, from retailers to international partners - explains Massimiliano Dovo, Co-owner of Tonitto 1939 - For this reason, we chose to invest in a concrete packaging evolution strategy, tackling a complex transformation involving development, production and industrial organization. Today, we believe that a product must increasingly reflect new environmental sensitivities not only through the quality it delivers, but also through the way it is presented and distributed on the market. The growing attention we are seeing especially in Northern Europe confirms that this direction is becoming an increasingly distinctive and strategic factor for the future of the industry.
