Riedel, the leading juice producer in the Netherlands, continues its journey towards sustainable packaging by converting the Van de Boom syrup range from traditional aluminium cans to SIG carton packs made with SIG Terra materials based on forest-derived polymers. 95% of these materials come from forest sources, including polymers linked to renewable forest-based materials through a mass balance system.
All three main materials of the packaging come from certified and responsibly managed sources via mass balance systems: the carton board comes from FSC-certified forests and other controlled sources; the renewable forest-based polymers are certified according to the ISCC PLUS standard; while the ultra-thin layer of aluminium, which protects the contents from light and oxygen, is covered by ASI (Aluminium Stewardship Initiative) certification. This approach allows for a further reduction in the already low carbon footprint of SIG packaging materials by up to 43%, thanks to the replacement of fossil-based polymers with forest-based polymers derived from tall oil, a by-product of the paper industry.
Compared to other packaging materials, SIG carton packs offer a significantly lower carbon footprint, thanks to their high proportion of renewable raw materials and lightweight design. The transition from cans to cartons demonstrates Riedel’s commitment to reducing environmental impact, progressively converting most of its portfolio to SIG packaging.
Riedel’s journey towards more sustainable packaging began in 2018 with the transition of its CoolBest and Appelsientje brands to SIG Terra packs made from forest-based polymers. This milestone laid the foundation for the wider adoption of sustainable packaging materials. In 2022, the company took a decisive step by replacing small-format PET bottles with SIG Smile packs, achieving a 75% reduction in CO₂ emissions.
At Riedel, we believe that every step toward a more sustainable and healthier future counts. Transitioning our Van de Boom syrup range to carton packs with SIG’s innovative packing material not only allows us to significantly reduce our environmental impact but also enables us to offer healthier choices for consumers. With our new low-calorie syrups containing less sugar, we continue to provide high-quality products that align with evolving consumer preferences,
