Ultramid Ccycled by BASF enters the HoReCa sector

Basf Gastronomy has been using high-quality products from Werz Wurst-Fleisch-Convenience for many years in the company canteens located in Ludwigshafen, Limburgerhof, and Lampertheim, as well as in all event venues. As part of a cross-value chain collaboration with Südpack, a supplier of high-performance packaging films, Werz is now introducing Basf’s sustainable polyamide Ultramid Ccycled for the first time in the Horeca sector (hotel/restaurant/catering) for meat and sausage packaging.

For the production of its thermoformed packaging, Südpack uses Ultramid Ccycled as a mass-balanced drop-in product that can be seamlessly integrated into existing production systems and processes.

The use of recycled raw materials assigned to the packaging shows that the requirements of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) can be met through chemical recycling,

said Paul Neumann, New Business Development & Sustainability Polyamides Europe at Basf.

The regulation, which sets a mandatory percentage of recyclates in food contact packaging from 2030, also includes recyclability requirements in addition to the defined quota. In the future, these regulations will apply not only to the food retail sector but also to packaging used in community catering.

The underlying high-barrier packaging film is rated as recyclable in the polyethylene film stream according to the current German minimum standard.

This high-quality meat packaging is also mechanically recyclable in the dual system, to which it is also returned after use in the Basf canteens - in other words, genuine closed-loop packaging,

added Neumann.

Sustainable and recyclable packaging is an important topic for us and one that will become increasingly important in the future. We are delighted to have gained a partner in BASF Gastronomy with whom we can establish this product solution in the Horeca sector,

said Frank Werz, Managing Director of Werz Wurst-Fleisch-Convenience.

About Ultramid Ccycled
Polyamide is a fundamental component in packaging foods such as meat and cheese, as its mechanical and barrier properties provide optimal product protection and a longer shelf life, while also reducing the amount of material used in packaging production. Ultramid Ccycled is derived from pyrolysis oil obtained through the chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste. The recycled raw material is fed into the Basf production network at the beginning and allocated to Ultramid Ccycled products using a mass balance approach. This way, fossil raw materials are replaced and saved. As Ultramid Ccycled has the same quality as the conventional product, the sustainable product is also ideally suited for applications with high quality, hygiene, and performance requirements, such as food packaging.
