From Rho printing works to global leader in flexible packaging: the story of a Group that revolutionised the sector with the degassing valve and today leads the transition towards circular solutions
The heritage of Italian excellence
When Carlo Goglio opened his printing works in Rho in 1850, he could hardly have imagined laying the foundations for what would become one of the world's leading players in flexible packaging. Today, 175 years later, Goglio celebrates a history that perfectly embodies the evolution of Italian industry: from local artisan business to international Group with 2,210 employees and a turnover of 470 million euros.
The innovation that changed the market
Goglio's journey intertwines with crucial moments in industrial innovation. In the 1950s the company was amongst the pioneers in using flexible plastic laminates, riding the wave of Nobel Prize winner Giulio Natta's discoveries on plastic materials. But it was in 1968 that the innovation destined to revolutionise the sector arrived: the one-way degassing valve for coffee.
This technical solution, which allows gas to escape whilst maintaining the coffee's organoleptic properties unchanged, established itself as an international standard and still represents a symbol of Italian engineering excellence in packaging today.
The sustainable turning point
Today Goglio faces the most important challenge in its history: reconciling technical performance with environmental responsibility. The Group has developed a range of mono-material and polyolefin laminates "ready for recycling", compostable capsules and reduced environmental impact solutions.
Franco Goglio, Chairman and Managing Director, emphasises: "We shall continue to look to the future with ambition and responsibility, placing sustainability and innovation at the centre of our strategies".
Technology and advanced services
The offering is completed with Goglio MIND, a platform based on IIoT technology that enables production data collection and analysis for predictive maintenance and operational efficiency optimisation. An approach that demonstrates how digitalisation can support sustainability objectives.
A model of responsible growth
With production facilities in Italy, Holland, United States, China and Brazil, Goglio has demonstrated that it's possible to grow on a global scale whilst maintaining solid territorial roots. The recent celebration at the Daverio plant, with recognition for over 380 colleagues with at least 25 years' service, confirms the focus on people as a founding value.
Sector prospects
Goglio's story represents a significant case study for the packaging industry: how technical innovations can become market standards and how historic companies can reinvent themselves to lead the sustainable transition.
The Group, present in the coffee, food, chemical, cosmetic, detergent, beverage and pet food sectors, continues to develop its integrated Fres-co System®, combining machinery, materials and accessories for complete packaging solutions.
