United Caps, an international manufacturer of closure systems, was honoured for its Bump Cap at the Save Food Design Awards at the Shanghai New International Expo Center during the Shanghai World of Packaging (SWOP 23) trade fair in China from 22 to 24 November.
The Bump Cap is designed to detect the degree of degradation of its contents to reduce food waste. As the beverage begins to degrade, bumps form on the top of the cap that can be easily identified by touch. Using this gel technology, which is much more accurate than the sell-by date, Bump Cap has been proven to extend the shelf life and storage of beverages, including milk and fruit juices.
This gel is incorporated into the Bump Cap and is activated when the drink is first opened. Without any physical contact with the contents of the drink, the system uses time and temperature to calculate exactly when the drink begins to spoil.
Thomas Dohse, Director of the interpack alliance (an initiative that encompasses all of Messe Düsseldorf's international packaging events) said:
the Save Food initiative is dedicated to tackling one of the world's most critical challenges: food loss and waste. The packaging industry has a vital role to play in reducing food loss and waste. As members of the industry, we have an active role to play. Together, and with the support of our partners in the Save Food Initiative, we are working tirelessly to save and preserve food and make a positive impact on the environment.
