A holistic approach to PET container development

Capable of designing and manufacturing packaging taking into account all the key parameters that characterise it, both aesthetically and functionally, from the idea to the product on the shelf, Sipa evaluates not only the aesthetics of containers but also how they reflect the brand identity, how they behave on the production line, how easy they are to produce and, last but not least, how much they cost to produce. Considerations such as these have guided the company in the development of recent solutions for various applications.

100% rPET water bottle
The Canadian rPET company Ice River Sustainable Solutions, through its material recycling company Blue Mountain Plastics, recently decided to expand its product range with a 15 litre rPET bottle for water dispensers. Sipa contributed to the design of this bottle, which is characterised by excellent resistance to head impact and vacuum (which is progressively created as the water runs out and the bottle is emptied) thanks to the optimised distribution of the material along the walls of the container.

Packaging for heady perfumes
Sipa's innovation is aimed at pushing the limits of what PET can do, as in the case of the new solutions developed for the sophisticated world of cosmetics and perfumery. For many years, this market was the exclusive domain of glass, but times and the attitudes of cosmetics manufacturers and consumers are changing. Sipa is proving that it is possible to produce PET bottles for cosmetics and perfumes that add value to the product and are more environmentally friendly to produce than glass bottles, thanks to the lower energy input required in the conversion process and the logistics involved, thanks to their light weight. In this context, the manufacturer has developed a classic 50 ml bottle, produced in various colours on an ECS SP 80 injection stretch blow moulding system.

Stackable containers for cooking oil
For edible oils, Sipa has developed a new 20-litre PET container with a 77mm neck and a base with a specially shaped recess to allow the containers to be stacked. To this end, they have excellent head load resistance, which makes them stable once stacked, also thanks to the square base to optimise storage and transport space. These characteristics have not affected the weight of the containers, which are extremely light: 550 g, which means lower transport costs and easier handling. Fully recyclable, these containers are a more economical proposition than metal cans and more environmentally friendly than solutions using other plastic materials.

AwarPET mineral water bottle
Last but not least, Sipa's designers have demonstrated their ability to develop containers that combine aesthetics and performance by following the principles of AWArPET - Sipa's trademark for environmentally conscious PET packaging design and production. In this case, five different bottle sizes have been developed, ranging from 330ml to 1.5l, which can be produced from post-consumer recycled PET flakes and filled directly in-line using Sipa's proprietary XTreme Renew Sincro Cube system. Designed for natural mineral water, these ultra-lightweight bottles feature a soft wave profile to evoke feelings of calm and serenity.
