The ingredient from Origin by Ocean redefines sustainability in cosmetics by combining marine upcycling, clinically proven efficacy, and a circular production model compliant with major international regulations.
OceanBoost™ LF from Origin by Ocean has been awarded the winner in the Sustainability category at the Cosmopack Awards 2026, the competition recognizing the most innovative and pioneering solutions presented by top companies in the cosmetic supply chain, organized by Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna in collaboration with BEAUTYSTREAMS.
From invasive algae to regenerative resource
OceanBoost™ is a water-soluble polysaccharide, specifically a high-purity fucoidan derived from the cell walls of brown algae. The ingredient, which combines cosmetic performance with measurable environmental impact, is obtained through the upcycling of Sargassum, an invasive species that disrupts marine ecosystems by blocking light and reducing oxygen levels. Removing the biomass before it reaches the shore and decomposes contributes to ecosystem regeneration and creates a positive impact on coastal communities.
The production process is based on a patented biorefinery founded on the principles of green chemistry. Unlike many natural ingredients that rely on intensive cultivation or sugar-based fermentation processes, OceanBoost™ requires no agricultural land, freshwater, or fertilizers.
Clinically proven efficacy and formulation versatility
The sulfate-containing bioactive groups in the fucoidan structure modulate enzymes such as collagenase, hyaluronidase, and elastase, helping protect extracellular matrix proteins from degradation. This mechanism supports the efficacy of other active ingredients and reduces the potential irritation caused by ingredients like retinoids and exfoliating acids.
OceanBoost™ is effective even at low concentrations, making it suitable for various formulation types, including emulsions, gels, and serums, while maintaining stability across a wide pH range. Its use also extends to an “inside-out” approach, encompassing both topical applications and potential nutraceutical integrations.
The production model is distinguished by near-total utilization of biomass, with by-products valorized as feed, fertilizers, and biomaterials. The process operates without SVHC substances and employs closed-loop systems for reagent reuse, with LCA analysis underway to quantify environmental impact.
The ingredient, listed under INCI Fucoidan and featuring a purity above 80%, complies with major international regulations, including EU Cosmetic Regulation 1223/2009, and is registered or compliant in multiple global markets.
