45 million euros from Intesa Sanpaolo to Montello for circular economy projects

The Italian company Montello obtained from the Italian bank Intesa Sanpaolo a 45 million euros loan out of the 6 billion euros ceiling dedicated to circular economy established in the 2018-2021 Italian Business Plan.

The objective of the loan is to support the 2021-2022 investment plan as well as the external growth of Montello, which, in approximately 20 years from its conversion from the iron and steel business to the recycling of plastic and organic waste business has become an example of circular economy not only in Italy but also at an international level. For the development of circular economy, the Lombardy region has already supported approximately 30 projects for an amount of over 100 million euros.

Montello until 1995 produced steel and rebar for reinforced concrete. In 1996, the business was converted into the recovery and recycling of post-consumer plastic packaging waste and organic waste from separate collection. Today the company employs 650 people and in the Montello (Bergamo) plant it recycles 200,000 tons per year of post-consumer plastic packaging and 600,000 tons per year of organic fraction from separate waste collection, from which biogas are obtained. Over the years it has achieved ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 18001 and ISO 50001 certifications, and in 2017 it obtained the sustainability certification of bio-methane produced for automotive use.
