Mondi has teamed up with three partners to recycle waste from two production sites in Jülich, Germany and Heerlen, the Netherlands, into a new secondary raw material.
The partners are Veyzle, a Dutch specialist in paper and plastic recycling; Wepa, a producer of tissue paper; and Soprema, a supplier of waterproofing and insulation materials.
Specifically, Veyzle collects Mondi's production waste, which is then sorted, shredded, bundled and transported to Wepa, which uses cleaning technology to separate laminated and siliconised papers into paper towels.
Carlos Martinez Ezquerra, Circular Economy Manager Flexible Packaging at Mondi, said:
We are committed to eliminating waste from our production processes through our MAP2030 programme. In this project, we have tried to make more effective use of production waste by valorising it as a secondary raw material for other applications. We are very proud of the 95% waste reduction achieved at both plants and now look forward to working with Celab, the industry's leading self-adhesive label initiative, and building relationships with other partners to further improve the circular flow of materials at our other liner plants in Europe.
