IFCO, one of the global leaders in the production of reusable packaging for fresh products, achieved a new record in environmental savings in 2024, further strengthening its position at the forefront of sustainability in the industry. Thanks to the adoption of the circular pooling system, IFCO SmartCycle, the company and its customers have reaped significant environmental benefits, reducing the ecological impact of the supply chain.
Exceptional Environmental Savings with IFCO SmartCycle
In 2024, IFCO facilitated the delivery of 2.4 billion shipments of fresh products in reusable packaging containers (RPCs) worldwide, generating unprecedented environmental savings:
- 674,333 tons of CO₂ emissions avoided
- 54,308 megalitres of water saved
- 14,854 terajoules of energy preserved
- 1,363,131 tons of solid waste reduced
- 66,015 tons of food waste prevented
These figures translate, for example, into emission reductions equivalent to 140,344 trips around the planet by car, water savings matching 21,723 Olympic swimming pools, and the annual energy consumption of 746,668 households.
A Certified Commitment to Sustainability
For the eighth consecutive year, IFCO will issue personalised Sustainability Certificates to its customers. Based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies in accordance with ISO 14040/14044 standards, these certificates provide a scientific quantification of each customer’s contribution to the environmental savings achieved through the IFCO SmartCycle circular pooling model.
Producers, growers, distributors, and retailers will thus be able to demonstrate their commitment to reducing the environmental impact of their supply chains with concrete data. An increasing number of companies are using these certificates to measure and communicate their progress in achieving sustainability goals.
Celebrating Success at Fruit Logistica 2025
IFCO will share these achievements with its customers during Fruit Logistica 2025, the leading international trade fair for the fresh produce industry, taking place in Berlin from 5 to 7 February. Visitors will have the opportunity to collect their Sustainability Certificates at the event, joining the celebration of a business model increasingly geared towards sustainability.
