Amcor and Metsä Group Focus on Fibre-Based Packaging

Packaging manufacturer Amcor and Metsä Group, a leading player in the forestry sector, have enthusiastically announced a new collaboration aimed at revolutionising the world of food packaging. Through this partnership, the two companies aim to develop innovative, eco-friendly, and recyclable packaging solutions, responding to the growing demand for sustainability in the packaging industry.

The initiative is based on combining Amcor's advanced high-barrier film technology with Muoto, a wood-based moulded fibre product developed by Metsä Spring, the innovation arm of Metsä Group. The primary goal is to create fibre-based packaging that is not only durable and functional but also protects perishable food products, extending their shelf life in a more sustainable way.

A Greener Future for Food Packaging
The novelty of this collaboration lies in the use of Muoto, a recyclable and biodegradable product made from renewable wood pulp, which will be further enhanced by Amcor's coating technology. By integrating the high-barrier film, Muoto improves its performance, offering advanced sealability and extending the freshness of food products, without compromising sustainability.

Recyclable Packaging for the Future
The final solution proposed by the collaboration will be recyclable in the paper stream in most European markets, with a recyclability score of over 80% according to CEPI standards. Moreover, the long-term ambition is to develop a compostable version, further pushing the sector towards a waste-free future.

The first products from this collaboration are expected to be available to European consumers by the end of the year, marking a significant milestone on the path towards more sustainable and green packaging solutions.
