Smurfit Westrock and Nestlé: innovative solutions to reduce emissions with Quality Street

Smurfit Westrock has collaborated with Nestlé to develop a new paper-based container for the iconic Quality Street sweets, which will be available during the Christmas season.

Nestlé commissioned this experimental packaging as part of its initiative to optimise resources. The new design also improves logistics, allowing more packages to be transported per pallet, thus contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

The introduction of the paper container follows the switch to paper wrappings for Quality Street sweets, which took place in 2022. Now, both the container and the wrappers can be recycled through household recycling streams.

The new packaging retains the classic hexagonal shape and purple colour that are characteristic of the brand and will be sold alongside the traditional version in selected Tesco stores. Both versions are the same size and contain the same weight of chocolates.

Smurfit Westrock continues to develop innovative paper solutions, with a focus on the performance and sustainability of its products.

Saverio Mayer, CEO for Europe, MEA and APAC at Smurfit Westrock, commented:

The new container, the result of our collaboration with Nestlé, is an example of how a paper-based solution can bring numerous benefits in terms of design, functionality, and, of course, sustainability. We knew this iconic brand needed a distinctive solution that was not only visually appealing but also easily integrated into household recycling systems. We hope it meets the needs of the growing number of consumers seeking more sustainable options.
