A new high-barrier, single-material pouch from Borealis is made from more than 95% PP after mechanical recycling. It meets the Ceflex (Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging) definition of “fully compatible with the mechanical recycling of PP” and offers an economical alternative to traditional pouch formats made from more different materials.
Traditional lamination structures could achieve 90% from a single material, but thanks to the collaboration between Borealis, which supplied polyolefins with high processing stability and lamination strength, and its partners, this figure was increased to 95%. Profol and Jindal Films produced the PP and BOPP films respectively, which were laminated using binders supplied by Mitsui Chemical, while the packaging was produced by Huhtamaki Flexible Packaging.
The lamination of PP and BOPP films resulted in a single material laminate with unique and advantageous properties, including high barrier, rigidity and tightness, which were exploited to make the packaging particularly suitable for storing and protecting moisture-, oxygen-, light- and aroma-sensitive foods, extending their shelf life and reducing food waste.
