High-quality packaging solutions for meat and sausage products play a key role in extending shelf life, preserving freshness, and enhancing food safety. However, with the entry into force of the PPWR, packaging materials will also need to become significantly more sustainable
The most effective steps to achieve this goal are essentially twofold. First, reducing resource consumption and the carbon footprint through smarter packaging design, improved material efficiency, and effective recycling of the plastic fractions already in circulation. Second, increasing the use of recycled content, recyclable mono-material structures, and bio‑based alternatives.
The product and service portfolio of SÜDPACK, a leading manufacturer of plastic films, demonstrates that even in challenging regulatory and market conditions, the transition toward more environmentally friendly packaging solutions is achievable—and, above all, represents a tangible economic opportunity. Its portfolio comprises a broad range of conventional reusable laminates as well as recyclable, material‑efficient structures designed to meet diverse product- and process-specific requirements.
Customized packaging solutions for meat and sausage products
For sliced meat and cold cuts, SÜDPACK has developed a packaging concept for MAP applications based on PP top and bottom webs, and therefore fully recyclable, belonging to the Pure Line product family. The bottom web provides excellent thermoformability and mechanical stability, while the high‑barrier, peelable top web ensures extended shelf life and clean peel performance.
The Multifol® thermoformable film range, by contrast, reliably protects ground meat, roasts, frankfurters, and chops thanks to its high puncture resistance. Both conventional and recyclable laminate structures within this product family rank among the best sellers in the SÜDPACK portfolio. In addition to outstanding sealing performance, they also deliver high transparency for an attractive point‑of‑sale presentation.
With SafePeel Clear NT, SÜDPACK offers a next‑generation, highly transparent lidding film that seals exceptionally well to mono‑PP trays and, at a thickness of 37 µm, is more than 25% thinner than its predecessor. Thanks to reliable sealing even in the presence of seam contamination, delicate and perishable foods such as poultry, steaks, and self‑service products remain optimally protected. At the same time, an innovative opening solution ensures ease of use and convenience for the consumer.
By contrast, the PP‑ and PE‑based mono‑material structures of the CarbonLite® series can be used, for example, as ultra‑lightweight PP flow packs for ground meat or as self‑standing PE doypacks for mini salami products. Key features include high barrier properties for optimal product safety, reliable processing at high cycle rates, recyclability, and reduced material usage.
