Recycled and recyclable paper packaging for Philips home appliances

Versunia Dutch manufacturer of electrical appliances, has introduced packaging made of 100% recycled paper for all Philips products. Consumers can dispose of the cardboard responsibly, as the paper is also 100% recyclable.

For maximum impact, the new packaging will first be applied to Versuni's top performing Philips appliances, including the Philips Airfryer, the espresso machine with LatteGo, the 3000 series steam iron, the air purifier and the 8000 series cordless vacuum cleaner.

This will be extended to the entire product range in the coming years. In addition, single-use plastic inner packaging will be replaced with more sustainable alternatives across the Philips portfolio globally within four years. These measures represent a significant step towards Versuni's goal of turning homes into homes and its commitment to designing products and packaging for longevity, repairability and reuse, turning waste into resources.

Henk S. de Jong, Chief Executive Officer of Versuni, said:

Our aim at Versuni is to turn houses into homes. With this ambition comes the responsibility to set new standards and adopt more sustainable practices throughout our value chain. The introduction of sustainable packaging across the Philips portfolio is an important step in our commitment to reduce our impact on the planet, our common home.

Boxes made from 100% recycled paper can withstand transport without the need for additional protection, allowing customers to stick the shipping label directly onto the packaging. The printed area of the box has been significantly reduced, using 65% less ink. Where possible, the size of the redesigned packs has also been reduced through a focus on space optimisation, minimising the amount of empty space in each product box. Versuni is taking steps to integrate more sustainable practices through digitalisation by introducing scannable QR codes printed on product packaging, which have replaced the traditional multilingual instruction manual.

Wouter van Tol, Sustainability Manager at DS Smith, Versuni's partner, said:

We have worked with Versuni in the design and production stages to optimise the supply of paper packaging. Our pioneering Circular Design Metrics tool, developed in partnership with the Ellen McArthur Foundation, was a key step in this process. It is encouraging to see a company like Versuni proactively working with us towards a more circular economy.
