From the grain supply chain to bio-based packaging

An important innovation project in the Maremma cereal supply chain, with a focus on developing new packaging materials from agricultural by-products, has come to an end

The project explored the use of straw and bran, by-products of grain processing, to create a sustainable packaging solution for flour. This is at the core of MOLIPIU’, a project funded by the Tuscany Region under the DEFR 2022 program and promoted by the Valle Bruna Cooperative, with scientific support from CNR -IBE.

The initiative aimed to assess the technical, environmental, and communicative feasibility of a cellulose-based material derived from agricultural residues, turning by-products traditionally considered low-value into a promising raw material for packaging. During the project, various eco-packaging solutions were tested for mechanical performance, functional reliability, compatibility with flour packaging, recyclability, and consumer perception. The work, carried out with the support of Società Lucense (Lucca), helped define the features of packaging capable not only of protecting the product but also of conveying its origin and connection to the local territory.

The project is set within a regulatory and market context increasingly focused on reducing plastic use and promoting the bioeconomy. Valorizing straw and bran in packaging reinforces the concept of an integrated supply chain, where agricultural production and processing interact with packaging design to create a coherent circular economy model.

Although the current quantities of by-products do not yet allow industrial-scale production, MOLIPIU’ identified both limitations and potential, as well as possible collaboration opportunities with industry. The experience demonstrates how packaging innovation can originate directly within agriculture, turning residue management into a strategic lever to reduce environmental impact and enhance the competitiveness of local supply chains.
