Recycling cardboard creates outdoor tiles

Tetra Pak and Leroy Merlin are launching a new interlocking tile made from TwoECO, a recycled material made from PolyAl, the plastic and aluminium component of recycled beverage cartons, together with a proportion of wood sawdust.

Ideal for installation in outdoor environments such as gardens and terraces, it is a powerful, tough and durable product that combines high functionality with minimal environmental impact.

In its traditional composition, Tetra Pak beverage cartons consist of 70% carton and the remaining 30% polyethylene and aluminium, which, once recycled, can be used as a second raw material to make valuable finished products.

This is a virtuous project which demonstrates how beverage cartons, when properly collected and recycled, ensure the development of a circular economy based on the reuse of materials for new applications.

Gianluca Carpanesi, Leader Market Team Leroy Merlin said:

The tile, which is the result of a project carried out with Artemisia and Tetra Pak, is a source of great pride for us because it fully respects the commitment that Leroy Merlin has made to one of the five challenges of our 2024-2026 sustainability strategy: the circular economy. We are also raising awareness among our customers by researching, developing and offering solutions that make their homes better, more efficient and more sustainable. With Tetra Pak, we share the values of the circular economy and we are delighted to be able to offer a product in our stores that is not only functional - it is an outdoor paving stone - but is also made from recycled material, the result of responsible choices: because, as we like to repeat, it is the small choices we make every day that make a difference.

Lorenzo Nannariello, Sustainability Manager South Europe, Tetra Pak, commented:

We are delighted to be working with a leading brand in the large retail sector such as Leroy Merlin. This is a synergy that not only highlights the quality and potential of materials derived from the recycling of Tetra Pak cartons, which can be transformed into a functional and aesthetically pleasing finished product, but also underlines the importance of pooling the knowledge and skills of different stakeholders to support the creation of a sustainable economic system. The latter is an objective that we at Tetra Pak have been working towards for some time, focusing on the various stages of the recycling chain. With this important partnership with Leroy Merlin, we are confident that we can make an even greater contribution and promote the use of recycled products in an ever wider context.
