Berry Global, US-based packaging manufacturer, has recently teamed up with Mondelēz International, which represents several well-known snack brands, and LyondellBasell to incorporate 50% ISCC PLUS-certified circular plastic through advanced recycling technology, based on a mass balance approach, into the protective film liners for Triscuit Crackers packaging in the USA and Canada. This innovative packaging solution complements the existing outer box, made from 100% recycled paperboard with 35% post-consumer recycled content.

The new bag-in-box liners are expected to help Mondelēz divert over one million pounds of plastic waste from landfills annually, advancing the company's sustainable packaging goals and its commitment to achieve 5% recycled plastic content by 2025, while continuing to deliver fresh, high-quality snacks to Triscuit enthusiasts.

Partnering with Berry and embracing advanced recycling technology for our product represents exciting momentum towards our brand’s commitment to more sustainable packaging in the near term, while helping support the company’s longer-term circular economy vision,” said Caitlin Schell, Marketing Director for Triscuit, Mondelēz International. “Collaborative efforts like these are essential in keeping materials in use and out of the environment, continuing to deliver high-quality products at scale, and signaling the need—and opportunity—for greater industry-wide change.

As many brand owners seek pathways to achieve their sustainability goals, including the use of renewable or recycled materials in their packaging, Berry’s ISCC PLUS-certified facilities provide customers with assurance regarding the chain of custody of circular content. These materials meet ISCC’s standards for recycled, renewable, and recycled-renewable materials, ensuring traceability along the supply chain and verifying that certified companies adhere to high environmental and social standards.

This collaborative effort aligns with our ongoing commitment to designing and developing innovative solutions that support our customers’ ambitious sustainability goals.

We are committed to blending our unique expertise and world-class facilities to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions that tackle our customers’ most common and pressing packaging hurdles,” said Wesley Porter, Business Development Director, Sustainability & Innovation, Berry Global. “Creating demand for advanced recycling and certified circular content drives more end markets for recycling polyethylene-based, flexible packaging.
