New bio-based desiccant packs from Clariant

Clariant, a sustainability-focused specialty chemicals company, is taking a further step to improve the environmental impact of desiccants by adding plastic-free Desi Pak ECO desiccant packets to its range of responsibly sourced, highly adsorbent natural clay solutions that help manufacturers and distributors protect sealed packaged goods from moisture damage.

The innovative new desiccant packs feature bio-based paper made from sustainably sourced raw materials and use only water-based inks and adhesives. Available in standard pack sizes of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 33 grams, including bespoke sizes, they are filled with carefully selected granulated high quality bentonite clay, which is responsibly sourced, minimally processed and offers highly efficient moisture adsorption compared to synthetic alternatives in the most common packaging conditions.

Ryan Grauer, Head of Sales, Marketing & Technology, Cargo & Device Protection, Clariant Adsorbents & Additives, commented:

Moisture control plays an integral role in the supply chain to preserve the quality and integrity of moisture and humidity sensitive products. Moisture damage has a known environmental impact, creating waste from discarded goods and emissions associated with replacing damaged goods. With the increasing demand for packaging solutions with a lower carbon footprint, we are pleased to offer our customers the option of bio-based paper packs that deliver the proven protective performance of our naturally occurring, highly adsorbent bentonite clay desiccant.

The new Desi Pak ECO packs, the latest addition to Clariant's wide range of Desi Pak desiccant packs & bags, carry the EcoTain label, which recognises products with outstanding sustainability benefits. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the Desi Pak ECO product, based on desiccant manufactured in the United States, showed that the responsibly mined bentonite clay has a lower carbon footprint and uses less energy than synthetic desiccant due to a less complex manufacturing process. It also uses significantly less water to produce the raw material.

To further help customers reduce their own Scope 3 emissions, Clariant has extended the sourcing of lower-impact raw materials to include transport packaging. The cardboard packaging used to transport Desi Pak ECO is recyclable and made from sustainably grown raw materials. In addition, Desi Pak ECO is packaged with cobalt-dichloride-free (CDF) moisture indicator cards.
