At the 2024 edition of Marca, the trade fair for modern organised distribution (DMO), Novamont presented the results of the company's research and development on Mater-Bi compostable materials for the production of food trays and coffee capsules.
With the new Mater-Bi grades, it will be possible to produce films for thermolamination (lamination) and thermosealing of cellulose food trays with multiple technical performances and with a lower environmental impact: waterproofing of the container (without the use of PFAS), heat resistance, gas barrier for modified atmosphere packaging and extended shelf-life, easy opening, industrial and domestic compostability and recyclability in the paper chain.
In addition, thanks to its collaboration with G. Mondini - a leading manufacturer of machines and complete lines for food packaging - Novamont can offer the food industry customised packaging solutions and a package of additional services such as product development, technical validation tests, environmental performance assessment, compostability tests according to EN 13432 and environmental communication tools.
The new Mater-Bi grades allow the production of different types of compostable capsules, with three processing technologies and different oxygen barrier levels to meet different market requirements:
1. injection-moulded Mater-Bi capsules
2. thermoformed Mater-Bi capsules
3. thermo-laminated cellulose capsules with Mater-Bi film (liner), also recyclable in home composting.
Alberto Castellanza, Novamont's Market and Product Development Director, said:
Novamont has always been committed to the development of biodegradable and compostable products, through investment and research in innovation on the one hand, and through the creation of a high-tech industrial chain, in a logic of partnership, to offer concrete solutions in the field of food packaging on the other.
