From an all-Italian cooperation, a compostable flexible film for the food industry

Long engaged in the R&D of packaging with a lower environmental impact, Ticinoplast has collaborated with Novamont, SunChemical Group and Uteco Group to develop a new flexible film for food packaging, able to combine recyclability and eco-design requirements with very high performances.

Made of biodegradable and compostable materials (biopolymers, inks, adhesives, barrier products and substrates), the film has technical characteristics in line with those of the traditional plastic alternatives but, moreover, after use, it can be destined to the collection of the wet fraction and sent to industrial composting.

Know-how synergies

In this all-Italian chain of industrial and technological excellence, the partners involved in the project have shared their respective skills in terms of raw materials, processing and printing technologies, inks, adhesives and coatings. On the other hand, as Paolo Rossi, managing director of Ticinoplast, commented, «the collaboration between several companies is the fundamental element that allows to accelerate the process of technological innovation, leading to the creation of solutions suitable for food packaging that respect the environment».

In practice, Novamont Mater-Bi bioplastic flexible film, extruded with Ticinoplast technology, is treated with Aerbloc Enhance/Sun Chemical barrier lacquer, printed with Aqualam/SunChemical water-based inks and laminated using a SunLam/SunChemical compostable solvent-free adhesive through Uteco Group s printing and laminating technology.

It is therefore a solution that enables the realisation a wide range of laminated structures suitable for many types of food packaging on many horizontal and vertical automatic packaging lines, as well as ideal for producing preformed pouches of various kinds.
