Focus on: consumers & retailers

The speaker due to open the section dedicated to cultural trends linked to sustainable choices will be Nomisma’s market intelligence manager, Silvia Zucconi.

Her contribution will explore the “Osservatorio  Packaging del Largo Consumo” a research tool created by Nomisma, in association with the University of Padua’s spinoff Spinlife, dedicated to examining packaging  used for fast-moving consumer goods  from an environmental sustainability perspective.

Every year in Italy, 2 million tonnes of packaging are produced, consisting of approximately 43 billion items, three quarters of which are intended for food and beverage use.

Research carried out by Nomisma has shown that the environment is a significant cause for concern, ranking third after unemployment and taxes.  And not only that,  78% of the interviewees stated that it was important to take action and listed some of the usual types of action taken, such as separating waste, saving energy, and purchasing products with sustainable packaging.

What is emerging here, then, is that the drivers of buying decisions made by average consumers include the quality, safety, and price of the product as well as its environmental aspects. At the same time, though, consumers begrudge paying more for green packaging  and expect industry and retailers to be the ones making the change.
