DS Smith and Martins Brewery partner to create a sustainable solution for beer

DS Smith has teamed up with Martins Brewery to develop an innovative and sustainable packaging solution for beer transport. The new 6-pack handle, made of corrugated cardboard, not only ensures effective protection for glass bottles but also introduces an experiential element for consumers, combining design, functionality, and entertainment.

Designed to enhance the shopping and unboxing experience, the packaging features an ingenious folding system that creates six individual compartments for the bottles. In addition to its practicality, the brewery added a playful touch by including a series of mathematical puzzles inside the packaging, offering customers an interactive experience that reflects the brand’s convivial philosophy.

The 6-pack handle is made entirely from untreated natural brown cardboard and assembled with eco-friendly adhesives, making it fully recyclable. The design was created to facilitate production and manual assembly, avoiding the need for complex machinery. Moreover, the external surfaces offer ample space for graphic customisation, allowing the brewery to communicate its values and identity in a distinctive manner.

Our products have a sustainable ethos. We wanted to combine ‘logically ecological beer’ with sustainable packaging and the design concept immediately catches the customer’s attention in a retail environment and the packaging contains maths and fun tasks that are reflect the individuality of the Martin’s brewery brand for our customers. The puzzles, like the recyclable packaging can be reused. We feel that we have achieved a high-quality product, innovation, functionality, and an attractive design all-in-one,

said Norbert Pilka, CEO of Martins Brewery.

We are thrilled for this opportunity to collaborate with Martins Brewery and to produce a solution that has an innovative, interactive, and memorable component. Our design team also set out to support this customer in reducing the volume and number of materials and with a focus on keeping these materials in use for longer. We have also worked hard to ensure that these holders can be easily constructed,
