Fresh Del Monte, one of the world's leading producers, distributors and sellers of fresh fruit and vegetables, is replacing its plastic strapping around bananas sold in Italy with paper strapping to meet its sustainability targets. The new packaging will save 2.16 tons of plastic each year.
The use of the band itself avoids excessive packaging consumption, prevents handling of the fruit at the point of sale and contributes to waste reduction. Developed without a coupling, these paper bands reduce material consumption by 37.5% compared to traditional bands, which often require a coupling with a plastic backing.
Christian Salnars, Senior Director Global Packaging, commented:
It was not easy to find a good combination of an adhesive paper substrate that could withstand the stresses of packaging and transport across the Atlantic. After a long process of research and development, we are proud to introduce this new paper band around our Del Monte bananas.
Distributed around the world, Del Monte products require effective and sustainable packaging. This minimizes food waste and its impact on the environment. The company is committed to facilitating recycling and finding ways to reduce plastic waste and keep it out of landfills. Del Monte has invested many years in researching new materials and revising existing ones.
