Aimplas, a technology and consultancy centre operating in the plastics industry based in Spain, has developed a coating for food and cosmetic packaging from fish gelatine and fishing nets as part of the EcoeFISHent project, which aims to implement circular solutions for the valorization of the fishing and fish industries.
34 partners from 7 countries are participating in this initiative coordinated by Filse (Finanziaria Ligure per lo Sviluppo Economico) and funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme (the European Commission's scientific research and innovation funding instrument).
The project aims to develop a coating for food packaging, made with bio-polymers through gelatine extracted from fish and recycled fishing nets that through the recovered polyethylene allows the production of packaging for the cosmetic sector through extrusion and injection moulding.
Finally, also as part of EcoeFISHent, a programme will be launched to protect the marine environment through the collection, recovery and recycling of abandoned fishing nets and the implementation of a sustainable fishing programme.
